将棋は英語で「syogiしょうぎ」です。

こちらでは将棋の駒や道具、用語などの英語をまとめました。

 

王将・玉将「 king」、飛車「 rook」、角行「 bishop」は同じ動きをするチェスの駒からきてます。

 

金将「gold general」と銀将「silver general」は日本語の直訳。

 

桂馬「knight」は似た動きをするチェスの駒の名前をそのまま使っています。

 

香車「lance」は香車の俗称である「槍」の直訳。

 

歩兵「pawn」もほぼ同じ動きをするチェスの駒名です。

 

8つの駒のうち「王将・飛車・角行・桂馬・歩兵」の5つはチェスの駒からの引用。「金将・銀将・香車」はオリジナルの命名となっています。

 

「駒が成る」は英語でpromotion（プロモーション）

駒が成ることはプロモーション。これは昇進の意味のpromotionと同じです。

Shogi is a traditional Japanese board game similar to chess. It is played on a wooden board divided into 81 squares, with nine squares in each row and column. The most significant difference between shogi and chess is that captured pieces can be reused as one’s own. In shogi, captured pieces can be used as one’s own, and they can be returned to the board as the captor’s fighting power. Both shogi and chess originated from a game called “Chaturanga,” which was born in ancient India and spread to Japan through China. Each player has 20 wooden pentagonal pieces, with eight different characters indicating different positions and roles such as king, rook, bishop, gold general, silver general, knight, lance, and pawn. The total number of pieces for each player is 20, including one king, one rook, one bishop, two gold generals, two silver generals, two knights, two lances, and nine pawns. Two players place their pieces on the board and move them alternately. The movement of each piece is different. If there is an enemy piece in the direction in which one moves, that piece can be taken and used as one’s own. The player approaches the opponent’s king while taking the opponent’s pieces. If the opponent’s king is taken, the player wins. If one’s own king is taken in the next move, it is a defeat.
